This course will provide a comprehensive study of local anesthetics utilized in the den-tal profession. During lecture and lab com-ponents , the participant will learn to safely administer topical and local anesthetics. It is a 2 credit college course which is equivalent to 30 CEU’s.

Format

Online Component

Participants will be required to complete on-line study guides, exercises and quizzes on Blackboard (Bb). Students must have inter-net access, basic computing and web skills.

Sufficient time must be devoted in order to achieve success in the course. It is esti-mated that a minimum of 20-30 hours of time will be required for this online compo-nent. You are encouraged to register as soon as possible so to allow adequate study time before the on site portion of the course.

Lecture and Lab Component

This onsite component will consist of 15 hours of classroom instruction and 16 hours of lab and clinical instruction. Participants must successfully pass both written and clinical examinations.

The fee for this 2 credit college course is $1079. regardless of where you live, but you must email flbench@ccri.edu to inform her of your out of state residence ASAP.

You must first enroll at the college for a $20.00 fee in order to later register for any courses. To enroll at CCRI online start here:

About one week later, as a CCRI student log in to MyCCRI where you should be able search and register for DHYG 2200 beginning April 4, 2011.

Deadline for registration is May 3, 2011.

Once registered for DHYG 2200 you then must go to the CCRI home page → for students→ Blackboard →log in the same way, DHYG 2200 will automatically show up in your Black-board. Begin taking the online course in the order presented. Complete it by June 3, 2011.

Pre-Course Requirements

American Heart Association

Healthcare Provider Level

2. Current state licensure

Documentation must be presented at the start of the course.

In addition , participants must complete medical history and consent forms. These can be found on the course website.

Each participant must be able to both

receive and administer local anesthesia.

Course Completion

Participants must attend all scheduled sessions and pass a written and clinical exam in order to receive college course credits and a certificate of completion.

Upon successful course completion par-ticipants will be eligible to submit appli-cation to take the NERB (North East Re-gional Board) Local Anesthesia Exami-nation.

After successfully completing the NERB Local Anesthesia Examination partici-pants can apply to their respective state licensing board to obtain the required permit to deliver local anesthesia.

Local Anesthesia for Dental Hygienists

Description:   
This forty (40) hour training course is designed to prepare the licensed dental hygienist for the written certification examination for the Administration of Local Anesthesia administered by the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners (NERB) in compliance with the regulations of the Board of Registration in Dentistry, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. This course will include the basic science of local anesthetics and the techniques for administration; anatomy of the head, neck and oral cavity; indications and contraindications for administration of local anesthesia; selection and preparation of armamentaria; pharmacology of local anesthetic agents; and diagnosis, prevention and management of medical emergencies. 40 CEUs
