       ADHA Smoking Cessation Initiative

In November 2003, The American Dental Hygienists’ Association was awarded a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Smoking Cessation Leadership Center located at the University of California, San Francisco to participate in a nationwide effort to promote smoking cessation.

ADHA was chosen for this project along with several other health care professional associations because hygienists are in a unique position to help motivate patients to quit smoking.  An ADHA task force was formed which in turn developed an action plan to use the “Ask, Advise, Refer” intervention methodology as its core.  Protocols, scripts, power point presentations, and other resources were created to assist hygienists in educating patients about the tools available to help them with quitting attempts, such as state “quit lines” which are now being promoted.

During the first four years of the program ADHA built the foundation for the initiative. The Ask, Advise, Refer website was launched (www.askadviserefer.org) and a network of state liaisons was created.  In addition, ADHA appointed Carol Southard, RN, MS to serve as SCI project manager.  Through Carol’s efforts and feedback from state liaisons, the Ask, Advise, Refer website has been updated to include a wealth of resources to assist hygienists in helping their patients quit smoking.
